A 50+ Club session with saxophonist, Asher Moody

We are proud to celebrate the remarkable success of the 50+ Club which has quickly become a vibrant setting for local elders to connect with their peers. Hosted at the BLBG Hub on Keeley Road every Tuesday from 10am - 12pm, a variety of activities have taken place including entertainment by saxophonist, Asher Moody, a drama session, and a creative writing session delivered in partnership with the Croydon Library Service.

Two members of the 50+ Club shared how the group has impacted them.

BLBG Steering Group member, Arthens Simpson, said: “I’m perhaps one of the younger members of the group, so I love being with people from different ages and learning new things from them." Arthens believes the club breaks down loneliness.

Arthens described her standout moment as the occasion when an individual from a drama group visited and the ladies participated in acting exercises. “That was really a nice session that we had watching the ladies getting involved and joining in, brilliant.

“I hope that as the club progresses, we will continue to do creative activities that allow the members to express ourselves freely,” said Arthens.

Fayida Johnson said: “When you’re retired, you’re probably living alone, the club gets you out to meet people, discuss certain things, and hear the views of others.”

Fayida said her most memorable moment was likely when a library assistant supported other members and herself. “She checked our library cards and she told us how we could access books and papers and put it on our phones for us,” said Fayida.

If you are located in or around Broad Green and are looking for a social club for elders, we invite you to drop in for a cup of tea and try out our 50+ Club.
