Launched in Croydon in 1980, Budwal’s is a family business positioned next door to Big Local Broad Green that specialises in selling designer clothes at a lower price.
Mr B Budwal, the business owner and his son, Mr J Budwal spoke about the journey of Budwal’s.
When asked how Budwal’s started, J Budwal said: “My dad was encouraged by someone from the trade to try out the business.”
B Budwal reflected on the changes in Croydon over the years. He referenced the closing down of Allders, Debenhams and many shops. He said that when he started, there was no online shopping, however people are ordering online and shops are becoming quieter.
Despite these changes, Budwals have a website www.budwals.co.uk where a variety of clothing items are sold.
J Budwal spoke about the peak of Budwal’s saying, “The best period was from the 80s when Croydon was the hub of fashion. Everybody used to come to Croydon, that’s why the footfall was good. Everybody used to make money in Croydon, not just Budwal's, the whole town was busy.”
However, the business faced difficulty following the downfall of Allders.
B Budwal highlighted the crime rate increase, lack of choices, and vacant shops as challenges that have impacted Budwal's, a shift that began around 15 years ago, according to J Budwal.
In spite of these challenges, Budwal’s remain a key part of the community. They have a loyal customer base and constantly change their brands.
